What is TAVR?
The Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement technique is a novel treatment opportunity for patients who require a valve replacement but are inoperable, or at an intermediate to high risk for surgical valve replacement procedure. For patients who are above 60 or 70 years of age or not physically fit to undergo the surgery or prone to a surgical complication, TAVR can be a lifesaver. Why is TAVR beneficial?
TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure that repairs the aortic heart valve without removing the old, damaged valve. Instead, like in Angioplasty, cardiovascular experts insert a replacement valve into the aortic valve’s place, through a catheter or tube, which is inserted through the femoral artery (large artery in the groin).
